Weekly Medley #55

Recently Updated67

On the positive side, last week I managed to conquer that dreadful cold and I had the week off from university to rest, recharge and complete three rather large assignments. The Reading Break wasn’t exactly a break for me in the slightest but I was productive and I caught up a good bit on blogging, getting four posts out there that I felt really good about. In particular, I had such a nice and productive Saturday morning that I took it on myself to apply each and every of the eight MAC Lipsticks that I own and it turned into a full-on lengthy collection post complete with thoughts and lip swatches and I can’t even tell you how pleased I was with it – so that was a nice thing.

1. The Daily Face #24 | Smokey Eyes and Rosy Lips & Cheeks
2. I Used Up Things #5
3. The Disappointment: Essie No Chips Ahead
4. MAC Lipstick Collection + Lip Swatches, Musings & Favourites

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned this but in the last maybe three weeks, we’ve had more storms around here that I can count and it’s been absolutely freezing. Now, I’m well used to dealing with winter (being a Canadian and all) but my skin in particular has taken a hit from these subzero temperatures. I’ve been continuously reaching for the Caudalie Vinosource Overnight Recovery Oil to combat the drier and more sensitive skin, not just nearly every night but also in the morning when things are a little dry and foundation application would be a little frightening with just the standard moisturizing routine. Also on the dealing with drier skin theme, I’ve dug out my Quo Foundation Sponge that’s long overdue for a replacement – with the tearing starting to happen – and even longer overdue for a thorough clean and as one would imagine, I wet it and wring out the excess water and then use it to apply foundation seamlessly and more forgivingly – most likely because the sponge is wet and it sheers things out a bit. And finally on the most interesting beauty note, I sucked it up and finally admitted to myself that I had somehow lost my beloved NARS Golshan Satin Lip Pencil, had quite the freak out slash hissy fit and then obsessively searched my bags and finally found the treasure missing from my life. Let me tell you, the comfortable and long-wearing deepened red-berry hue was just as great as I had originally remembered and our romance has been rekindled.

Er, how was your week etc.?

MAC Lipstick Collection + Lip Swatches, Musings & Favourites

DSC_0396

DSC_0398 As were many first makeup loves, MAC (lipsticks) were my first form of lipstick love, back in grade eight- with a questionably pink shade and a few months later my beloved Creme d’Nude – so I thought it would be fitting to share my favourites, considering that I’ve been blogging well over a year. However, upon contemplating my favourites, I realized that I kind-of-sort-of adored all of my shades because over the years I’ve returned or back-to-mac‘ed all the ones that I did not love. And, I resolved this inner conflict by deciding to show and discuss all eight of my MAC Lipsticks but highlight my top five favourites in brackets. I’ll warn you that there are two limited edition shades in here and neither of them are available (from MAC, anyway) but don’t despair pleaseGet ready for some posing slash lip swatching awkwardness, dodgy lipstick application and terrifyingly rough lips. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

P.S. MAC Lipsticks come with 3 grams a product and retail for $19 CDN/ $16 US

MAC Lipstick in Patisserie (Lustre) | “sheer creamy neutral pink” (1)

Recently Updated59MAC Patisserie came into my life during the late Fall of 2013 and hasn’t been neglected ever since, becoming my go-to purse lipstick as it’s foolproof to apply, doesn’t require a mirror and is essentially a glorified tinted balm with an extra dose of pigment. Being as moisturizing and dryness forgiving as it is, the formula is not the longest wearing, only lasting three or so hours but for me it’s worth it. It’s a mix between a nude and a my-lips-but-better colour, being slightly browner/darker and warmer than my lips but still staying in that nude-ish family; I don’t wholeheartedly agree with MAC’s description and I would be more likely to call it a pinky beige with warm brownish undertones. I have yet to find a makeup look that the shade doesn’t suit + its actually hydrating also! 🙂

MAC Lipstick in Creme d’Nude (Cremesheen) | “pale muted peach beige”

Recently Updated58Creme d’Nude is, to this day, my favourite true paler nude lipstick and we’ve had a love affair since I was in ninth grade (or maybe the summer before) and now I’m nearing the end of my third year of university… Cremesheen formulas are not always my favourite as I don’t find them overly creamy, moisturizing or flattering, – they tend to stick to any textured parts – this shade has the best formula out of all the shades in the range that I’ve tried. I’ve come to prefer this warm-toned beige-nude with strong peachy-orange undertones with lip-liner to avoid that concealer lips effect and add some shape, though and it is very pretty that way. It lasts for about four hours on its own and had medium colour payoff that makes it more wearable than other paler nudes – MAC Myth, anyone? – even though it swatches very light. I would not recommend this for anyone with extremely cool undertones – it might be questionable.

MAC Lipstick in Sweet & Sour (Cremesheen) | “soft peach cream” (5)

Recently Updated60Despite being of the difficult-to-wear pastel family and not being one of the better Cremesheens, I bloody love the muted peachy-coral shade but given that it’s a pastel and remains rather pale in colour, I might suggest a lip liner to make it look a bit more wearable and for your lips to look like they have actual edges. It lasts 4-5 hours, surprisingly with medium colour payoff and can actually remain on the lips through some light eating and drinking. This is one of my absolute favourite everyday lipsticks in the spring and summer, even though my lips don’t love the formula and it tends to highlight every bit of texture and dryness in the lips.

MAC Lipstick in Kinda Sexy (Matte) | “neutral pinky-rose” (2)

Recently Updated61In the summer, I was wandering around MAC, tried on this lipstick and I fell in love with the neutral rosy-peach shade with some brown to it. It’s up there with Patisserie as being my favourite lipstick and is in the neutral category as well, but with much more colour than a nude. I’m tempted to almost consider it a my-lips-but-better shade even though its quite deep to be considered in this category. The finish is matte but it’s not drying, wears a ridiculous amount of time and doesn’t look outwardly bad on my dry lips. It also doesn’t hurt that the rosy-hued neutral shade is just so flattering on my fair warm skin tone, blue eyes and dark hair.

MAC ‘A Fantasy of Flowers’ Lipstick in Dreaming Dahlia (Lustre) | “sheer red-coral” – limited edition

Recently Updated62I don’t agree with the description of the last spring’s limited edition lipstick because it’s surprisingly pigmented and not sheer in the slightest and I find it leans much more pink-coral than red but I wouldn’t be overly concerned as it’s limited edition and no longer available. It was from the MAC A Fantasy of Flowers Collection, which overall was an impressive collection in my opinion. I haven’t worn this lipstick as much as I should in the past because it’s not exactly a bold lipstick or a neutral one either but lately I’ve been giving the balmy comfortable formula more play. It lasts maybe four hours on the lips and has that hydrating consistency whilst providing even medium and slightly buildable opacity. If you’re looking for a shade like this that you could actually get your hands on without resorting to ebay or the like, I’ve found that the more affordable NYX Butter Gloss in Cherry Cheesecake to be impressively close, with a slight bit more orange to it and a balmy-gloss consistency.

MAC Lipstick in Dubonnet (Amplified Creme) | “deepened claret” (4)

Recently Updated63The Amplified formula does all that it promises, gliding over the lips with that hint of hydration, providing amazing pigmentation, being as comfortable as anything on the lips while lasting for 5-6 hours unless there’s been some oily-food eating or sliding before the colour has fully dried down on the lips. Dubonnet is my favourite and only MAC deep autumnal shade offering and I love its versatility, straddling the line between a more wearable berry or deep read and a true vampy shade. It’s one of those colours that believe MAC named aptly because it actually looks like the wine in colour, being a red-leaning berry hue with neutral brown undertones (in the best way possible). I have to say that the pictures do not do the shade justice because the glossiness does not show up favorable on camera, but this is fixed as soon as you let the lipstick set or do a bit of blotting. The shade is very similar to my other favourite NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Golshan and notably cheaper.

MAC ‘Hey, Sailor!’ Lipstick in Sail la Vie | “bright mid-tone orange” – limited edition

Recently Updated64As one might guess on account of the pretty nautical packaging, this neon orange shade with a little hint of red to it, was, in fact, limited edition and out almost three years ago before it sold out quickly. Believe it or not, I bought this shade to wear to my prom over the top of a reddish liner (to match my dress) and I’m some glad that I did. The satin formula wears for ages and ages and eventually stains the lip with more comfortable and easier application than a matte. It’s nice and pigmented, also and lasts on my lips for a good five hours. I’m sure that this is a dupeable shade but I can’t think of any options on the top of my head – and if you’re crazy and want to track this one down, I’ve seen it on Amazon for inflated but not absolutely ridiculous prices. I haven’t worn this as much since starting my blog, unfortunately – but I wore it loads before – just because I didn’t want to be wearing a shade that you couldn’t get your hands on in a post…

MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo (Retro Matte) | “very matte vivid blue-red” (3)

Recently Updated65The cult-favourite shade has possibly the most drying clay-based formula ever and is difficult to apply to the lips but it lasts so long on the lips and doesn’t move so it definitely has its merits; the formula is most certainly worth it because the flame-bright red with cooler undertones and a hint of pink is stunning and as universally flattering as its reputation assumes. The shade lasts a ridiculous amount of time on the lips and doesn’t transfer but when it does fade, it tends to leave that ring effect so I would recommend reapplication and it makes teeth look remarkably whiter without being jarring on my warmer skin tone. I’m tempted to say that this is my favourite red and I’m definitely one of those red kind of girls.

Do you have a favourite MAC Lipstick to share? What one should I try next?

The Disappointment: Essie No Chips Ahead

DSC_0345

DSC_0350

In my experience, (and what I’ve gathered to be the experience of the consensus of others who talk/write about such things) Essie polishes are either fantastic or finicky, being gorgeous but sheer requiring a multitude of coats and effort and based on my experience with this top coat, the Essie No Chips Ahead Anti-Chip & Shine Top Coat ($9-10 CDN), I would wager that their treatment and coating products are very much the same. It’s not that the top coat is outwardly bad, as it adds that shine expertly and has that smooth top coat feel but it doesn’t work particularly well at preventing chips and it takes ages to dry so it can lead to less than spectacular results – bubbling or marks, anyone?

I’ve mentioned before that I’m less than stellar at all things nails so I’m definitely open to the possibility of user error, however, I just feel that despite the name, this is not the ideal top coat for someone with chipping prone nails that I have and less patience than desired. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve gotten nice looking manicures with this top coat but they have required a wee bit more patience than usual and they haven’t lasted much longer than they would without a top coat.

I will note that I was actually quite fond of this top coat worn alone on the nails because I found that it wasn’t too thin, didn’t smell weird, applied easily, added that gorgeous shine/smoothness and felt rather nourishing on the nails – it’s not marketed as nourishing or anything so I cannot exactly be certain – and I likely will use more of it this way. I would not recommend this top coat even to those with chip-resistant nails and infinite patience because if one is that saintly, I still wouldn’t recommend shelling out around ten dollars for this. I have heard fabulous things about their regular Good to Go Top Coat and honestly I wish I had listened to my first instinct and bought the standard one rather than hoping for more with the chipping-directed one.

And it’s not pink, originally anyway. I may have tried to apply the top coat over a vampy polish before it was not exactly dried down…

What’s your favourite top coat?
Maggie, x.

I Used Up Things #5

DSC_0343Even though this post is not particularly exciting and most of the products are not overly exciting, – although they are a bit more varied than my average empties post – I’m excited to bring to you my thoughts on a good number of products that I’ve used up recently. I will warn you, however, that I’m feeling my typical rambly self you’re in for a rather lengthy one. And I promise that my next post of this kind will be much more interesting, including some more actual makeup products…

DSC_0344

L’Oreal Sublime Soft Soothing Cleansing Wipes ($12.99): I’ve mentioned my reservations about using cleansing wipes in the past, both in terms of efficacy as a cleansing method and how irritated they tend to make my sensitive skin, usually being laden with fragrance and irritating alcohol. Now these were not the most amazing makeup removing wipe in the world, but I really enjoyed the alcohol-free offering from L’Oreal because it had some moisture, with the vitamin e and was not stripping. They are my favourite wipes that I’ve tried and they do not even make my eyes burn but the packaging method did not keep them particularly most for ever – to be honest, I kept these around for so long that the last wipe or two had to be wet with water to remove makeup effectively.

Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Creamy Cleanser ($10-12): After likely a year of use, at least once per day, I have run out of this gentle non-foaming gel-cream cleanser and I’ve really enjoyed it for its gentleness and ability to remove makeup decently to well. It has a similar texture to Cetaphil but I find it more effective at cleansing and gentle, free of harsh detergents, fragrance and other irritants. I might repurchase it but for now I’m using the creamier Extra Gentle Cleanser from Neutrogena.

Jergen’s Natural Glow Firming Daily Moisturizer ($9-10): Back last spring and summer, I was really enjoying using this moisturizer come gradual tanner to add some glow with zero upkeep. Even though I’m fair, I use the darker shade and I find that it gives a natural looking glow that does not take too much time to build up and most impressively, there’s no irritating alcohol or anything in the formula that pisses off my fickle dry eczema-infected skin. Plus, I rather enjoy how it functions as a nice rich but non-greasy moisturizer, smells like caramel and doesn’t stick to dry patches or anything. A few weeks back, I was feeling kind of pale and couldn’t find my regular moisturizer so I gave this a go again to stop looking quite so pale and two applications later, I’ve reached the end of the tube. It will be repurchased, as this one was – this was either my second or third bottle and I have another.

DSC_0338

L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes Excess Mascara ($9-10): After using this tube of mascara for a frightening length of time, – it may have been a year – I figure that it’s time to retire this loved mascara and it’s starting to flake something and might possibly lead to irritated eyes on a few occasions. It’s definitely one of my favourites, providing impressive separation and definition with a nice dose of both length and volume without any sort of clumping action in sight.

L’Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga Mascara ($9-10): Despite initially taking dislike to just how clumpy and wet this mascara was at first, I found myself enjoying it quite a bit as soon as it dried out some as it became less wet and provided less of a clumpy and more of a voluminous big lashed kind of look. However, there was only maybe 6 weeks that this mascara was particularly nice for – after that, the mascara began to flake quite badly and irritate my eyes slightly. Definitely a nice dramatic mascara for when it lasted, though.

Maybelline Color Tattoo Metal in Barely Branded ($9-10): I’m a big fan of this shimmery champagne cream eyeshadow-come-base and after having the cream product for well over a year, I’ve used up a great deal of the product, hitting pan (with a huge dip) and at this point it’s so dry that its unusable. I imagine I will purchase another in the near future. However, I do believe that MAC Paint Pots, while more pricy, have a creamier formula and stay creamy for far longer.

MAC Pro Longwear Waterproof Brow Set in Quiet Brunette ($21): I purchased this pigmented brow mascara back in June and I’ve been enjoying it tremendously ever since, especially when I’ve been in a lazy mood and can’t be bothered to actually fill in my brows – it’s pigmented enough to work through the brows on its own to fill sparse areas and add shape and it truly is waterproof so it holds my crazy brows in place like no other. Unfortunately, my bottle is now near empty and so dry its kind of unusable. It’s not an absolutely perfect match, as its a light brown shade with some ashiness but not quite enough for my brows that are kind of grey but I loved it so I would definitely consider purchasing again. I may try to get a use or two more out of the bottle because I do not want to be without it.

OGX Kukui Oil Sulfate-Free Shampoo ($7.99): I’m afraid that this shampoo is one of those products that has been sacrificed to sensible family members who have the audacity to throw out shared beauty products when they are empty, so it’s not in the picture. Alas, I really enjoyed this gentle shampoo because it worked without being stripping in the least, wasn’t too heavy despite its gentleness and had that amazing warm scent. I suppose I will repurchase it, given that it performs up there with the best of shampoos, even those at a much higher price bracket.

Dove Refresh + Care Invigorating Dry Shampoo ($6-8): I’m still rather new to the whole dry shampoo game but after nearly a year, I’ve finished up this affordable offering and I quite enjoyed it, for freshening the roots a bit and adding some body at the crown and roots. However, I found it could have quite a difficult white cast and a baby-powder like texture that were difficult to work with granted that I have wavy hair that does not like to be brushed in between washings. It did work, though, and I might go back to it in the future.

Pantene No Crunch Curls Whip ($6-8): A few months back, I picked up this hydrating mousse in hopes of finding it to be a nice mousse with hold and bounce with a bit of a moisture boost, without that drying effect that many can have. Whilst, I found that this mousse is anything but drying, I’ve found that it actually weighs my waves/ loose curls down and adds an irritating residue to my hair that just feels weird – probably from the hefty amount of mineral oil and petrolatum in the formula.

Sally Hansen Kwik Of Moisturizing Nail Polish Remover ($4-5): After a tragic incident where I laid this magical polish-removing tub on the ground on its side after use without noticing, there was a significant spill and as a result, the remover never was the same. I saw another one on sale and it has been purchased.

Bath & Body Works 3-Wick Candle in Spiced Apple Toddy ($22.50): I absolutely adore those warm cider-y scents – especially in the winter – and I burned this strong spicy cider scent constantly since the beginning of November to well into the first month of the year. It was hella strong in terms of throw, so in my small room I tended to burn it one wick at a time and it still delivered that warm comforting quintessentially-winter punch and I would definitely recommend it if you’re into these warm and spicy kind of scents – especially if you’re not someone who loves the sickly sweet scents that seem to dominate around this time of year. Believe it or not, there is no hint of caramel in this one.

Used up anything worthy of note lately?
Maggie, x.

The Daily Face #24 | Smokey Eyes and Rosy Lips & Cheeks

DSC_0306

DSC_0316

I acknowledge that with my general busy-ness over the last few weeks I could write a book on the things that I’ve been slacking on but one of the most noteworthy things that I’ve been slacking on for a much longer period is doing these daily makeup posts on the regular – it’s been likely over three months since my last one and I haven’t been doing them consistently since last summer, even though they were once one of my most frequent posts – and here I am, finally getting my act together with one. This is a neutral but smokey eye kind of situation with a rosy lip and all things that I love and go for when I have a bit of time and effort to put into my makeup – because of all that blending etc. – and I’ve featured some well-documented love products, a few new items that I’ve been enjoying from my recent Target trip and the Sonia Kashuk Creme Bronzer that I just felt like digging out today for the first time in ages.

Face

DSC_0323To be completely honest, I did the entirety of my eye makeup before even thinking about what went on my face because I could for once but I seem to have a mental block against actually starting off the post with anything other than the face, but I digress. Before going in with a pump of the DiorSkin Star Studio Makeup in 20 (and a little bit more to help the matching situation on my neck), I went in with my newly-acquired Maybelline FaceStudio Master Prime in Blur + Redness Control to actually prime the face. I’m actually rather enjoying the silicone-based primer because it’s rather lightweight but it does not have much of a green tint applied to the face to be honest. To cover my generally problematic undereye darkness, I dabbed on some Pixi Brightening Peach Correction Concentrate, with most of the product staying in the inner corner. I randomly decided to go for some cream bronzer today, concentrating the product, the Sonia Kashuk Undetectable Creme Bronzer in Rich Bronze, in the hollows of my cheeks before blending out to the temples and the top of my large forehead before setting my t-zone with some of the lovely MAC Studio Careblend Pressed Powder in Light. For blush, I went for the gorgeous rosy-coral hued Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Diffused Heat and feeling kind of dull and matte after that bit of powder, I went in with Incandescent Light from the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette  as a highlighter, focusing on my cheekbones.

Eyes

DSC_0334I started the whole face with my beloved NARS Pro Prime Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base because it actually works to keep things on and relatively uncreased, despite my deep-set eye situation before moving onto the gorgeous Dior 5 Colour Eyeshadow in Cuir Cannage that I’ve been loving reaching for on the daily. I began by blending some of the matte caramel shade into the crease, before building it up to add some depth and then applied the shimmery champagne onto the inner 2/3 of my lids with my fingers, dabbing a nice amount in the inner corners along the way – then the smokiness happened. I smudged the metallic plum along my lower lash-line and applied it to the outer corners of my eyelids, blending it somewhat into the crease, before finishing off the eyeshadow situation by concentrating the blackened plum shade in the outer corners, building up the colour before blending it into the surrounding haze of colour. On the eyeliner front, I went for a thin line and the subtlest flick using the L’Oreal Lineur Intense Brush Tip and for mascara, I went for a nice coat of Maybelline The Falsies on both the top and lower lashes. For the brows, I’ve still been using my rather large sample of the Anastasia Dipbrow Pomade in Taupe and have been enjoying it tremendously – I apply it with an angled brush focusing on the outer tail and arches of my brows before bringing it forward slightly and this way it gives a defined but actually believable sort of effect. It will be purchased full-size before long.

Lips

DSC_0329There really should have been some balm in the equation first but to be honest, I went straight in with the rosy coloured Annabelle Stay Sharp Waterproof Lip Liner in Java – which I’m loving by the way, especially for having a creamy formula and a retractable tip that actually does not break off – to both line and fill in my lips. Over the top, I went for the comfortable muted rosy-red offering from NARS, the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dolce Vita; and this is equally as amazing for a warm-hued true rosy shade for the lips, if you had any sort of doubt.

What makeup have you been reaching for as of late?
Maggie, x.

Weekly Medley #53/54

Recently Updated57

Last weekend, I thought I had a firm plan to do my fifty third weekly catch-up post on Sunday afternoon but in my relatively chill and lazy state, I had decided that I might as well put it off a day. I was feeling absolutely wretched after all, suffering under the weight of my yearly terrible cold and all that it entailed – fatigue, wheezing, coughing, sneezing, sore throat, congestion and that horribly runny nose – so without a thought to the week ahead, piled with deadlines each and every day, I put it off. I had gone through the motions of promising myself to do it on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and its only today that I have the time and relatively calm state of mind to put it all together. It has been a trying week and I’m fortunate to have survived and to have the reading week ahead off, even though I have a paper-ish thing due on Monday – a life-saving extension – and a good number of things due right after the break. Err, I’ll stop with the complaining…

Over the last almost-two-weeks, I can think of three items that I’ve been loving of the life-and-kind-of-beauty-related-variety: kleenex that does not rub your nose raw, the Eucerin Calming Daily Moisturizing Cream ($12.79) and my questionably old Clinique Superdefense Daily Defense Moisturizer SPF 20 ($51). The kleenex are an extremely obvious one given the cold situation and how weirdly sensitive my skin can get and the soothing and rich body cream is similarly obvious, as my skin is sensitive and extremely dry normally without a cold being added into the mix – the cream has the bonus of being pleasantly rich and soothing so that it does not irritate my sensitive skin with – you-guessed-it, eczema. The most interesting item out of the mix is my years old Clinique moisturizer that I’ve dug out again after losing it underneath my sink for a good six or eight months a few times. I’ve kind of forgot about the purchase years ago, motivated by the promise of a free gift and the chemical-sunscreen like pretty much all others, had irritated my sensitive skin in the past, especially when I was going through that rough patch of skin going on two years ago. I know, being in jar packaging especially, the SPF and the moisturizer in general should be long expired by now, but I have not noticed a smell/texture change, or any sort of adverse reaction on my skin so I’ve been giving the cream a go. I find I can avoid the irritation factor if I layer a soothing product (such as an oil etc.) underneath and with that addition, I’ve been enjoying applying this hydrating, illuminating and lightweight cream in the morning. I know the sun protection is really questionable but considering that it does not appear to have changed in any sort of way, I like to think that it’s a first step into getting sunscreen into my daily routine, no? By the way, I have the Dry Combination version that no longer exists but I have a sneaking suspicion that the Very Dry to Dry Combination offering is very similar, if not identical.

The (Bi)Weekly Link: Over the last little while I’ve been enjoying the beauty videos over on redheadphd’s beauty channel – in the real world, she goes by the name Lauren by the way and she’s the perfect balance of intelligent, humorous, beyond informative and calming, if you were wondering. I enjoyed her “January Favourites, Fails and ‘Fumes” tremendously. She does the best reviews period and I may or may not enjoy her use of alliteration…

The Shameless Self-Promotion: As a blogger, I’ve certainly viewed myself as quite a failure in the last week or so but I was rather proud of myself for getting my January Favourites up before too much of February went rolling by and I was rather pleased with how it turned out as well. Note: it is in fact over 1000 words long and concise by any means – oh well?

On an ending note, I did something shameful and as it tends to happen, it happened on a shopping trip with my good ol’ pal, Lauren, at Target because of the sad clearout sale that has been happening across Canada – I came out with a hundred dollars worth of stuff in my bag and bought a cringe worthy amount of lip products but if you want to hear about them you’ll have to stay tuned!

How was your last week or two?
Maggie, x.

January 2015 Favourites

DSC_0287 So, January’s favourites post is more than a few days late but it’s not because I forgot about sharing my monthly favourites in the slightest. I’ve actually been so busy, stressed, sick with this year’s horrible cold and piled with work to do that I haven’t been able to put my thoughts about my most loved products to pen and paper until this (long) weekend and now that I’ve had time, I managed to make myself so sleep deprived that it was not a possibility until now with the aid of caffeine. And when I say sleep deprivation, I slept maybe four or five hours on Wednesday and Thursday nights combined… and this wasn’t even stress induced as far as I’m aware.

DSC_0292

Caudalie Vinosource Overnight Recovery Oil ($55)

To be honest with you here, I’m informing you that throughout January I’ve been using this soothing night oil treatment, not just at night before moisturizer — or by itself when I can barely be bothered to wash my face — but in the morning as well and have been loving slash enjoying it tremendously. In the latter weeks of the month I’ve come down with a cold so that factor, my generally dry and sensitive skin along with the authentic-Canadian-winter weather we’ve been having have lead me to seeking more moisture and calming action. This oil blend has been my guy – I’m unsure of what pronoun to use – for boosting that hydration and delicate skin situation with its plentitude of antioxidants and thin, lightweight but rich texture.

Nuxe Reve de Miel Lip Moisturizing Stick ($9)

All month long my lips were as dry and as chapped as can be, even when taking my usual lip condition, the colder-than-cold weather and the onset of my cold into account. However, the situation would have been far more dire had I not had this lightweight soothing balm that both works fairly intensely and is effortless to use, both in terms of packaging and texture.

DSC_0293

Pureology Curl Complete Moisture Melt Masque ($50)

It really should not be a shock that I fell in love with Pureology’s newest deep conditioner in January, after purchasing it towards the end of December, cringing as I thought about the price of the conditioning product, considering that I have a great track record with their pricy but concentrated hair care, particularly on the treatment front. Despite being wary of the inclusion of silicone, – amodimethicone in particular – I have been loving using this very hydrating but lightweight deep conditioner after washing my hair throughout the month but more than that, I’ve loved how concentrated the product is despite its gel-like texture, how its pump dispenser is much more practical in the shower, the intense way that it detangles my problematic hair with minimal effort and product along with the kind of amazing floral scent.

NUME Classic Reverse Wands ($30-139)

When I had woken up with generally questionable hair and had the time and effort to add some heat styling to the mix to remedy the situation, I’ve been reaching for the hyped-up brand’s conical wand that I picked up in December, at Winner’s after seeing it on for a good price and being frustrated with just how heat resistant my hair is. This is the only curling iron, or maybe even hot tool, that my hair will hold the shape of for multiple days and it actually heats up adequately – and in like twenty seconds – to actually be able to style my massive quantity of fine wavy hair in well under a half hour. The reverse wand style looks funny but I have gotten numerous compliments on the voluminous beachy curls that it provides – and it’s great for wavy or curly haired ladies who suffer from the flat and relatively straight top sections of hair, particularly at the front that have a penchant to look pathetic. I don’t know how it managed this feat, but my generally unpredictable hair holds the curls from this for multiple days with the teensiest amount of hairspray, even when I’ve been caught in the rain!

DSC_0294

Quo 8-Piece Fall 2014 Brush Set ($30 – from $60)

At the beginning of January, I took the opportunity to pick up the Quo brush set when it was on sale for half price after being interested in trying some new brushes and realizing that I hadn’t actually tried any from the Shopper’s house brand. I have been in love and I would even have been in love if I had actually paid for the brushes in dollars rather than those lovely things known as Optimum Points. Overall, I have been massively impressed with the softness and quality of the brushes but my absolute favourites are the surprisingly firm crease brush – an amazing brush that sits halfway in between a traditional crease brush and everyone’s favourite MAC 217 -, the delightfully firm angled liner brush (for my brows), the traditionally shaped blush brush and the eyeshadow smudger brush – for a bit of that smoky action, particularly on the lower lashline.

Pixi Brightening Peach Correction Concentrate ($12)

I do love me a good corrector and after I spotted this relatively affordable salmon-toned offering in Target in late December, I couldn’t pass it up – and I’m glad I didn’t. It works in much the same way that my beloved Bobbi Brown Corrector in Light to Medium Bisque does but with a slightly lighter weight but creamy formula and a more brightening paler hue, with more product and for a fraction of the price. I am not pleased that I will not be able to get my hands on these in the future because Target is leaving Canada…

Chanel Rouge Double Intensite in Darling Pink ($39)

There was one lip product that I found myself reaching for in January, whenever I had enough time to actually grab one before leaving the door and I’m sure you have a good clue of which one it was. I am even more surprised after falling in love with the non-sticky two step lip colour that wears like glue that this expensive formula does not receive more buzz, as it does the unthinkable with these long-lasting formulas, lasting a good six hours through eating and drinking that actually feels comfortable on the lips. It also amazes me that I’ve loved the muted pale rosy pink shade, being someone who kind of cringes as the thought of pink lip products on themselves. Unfortunately, I believe this shade is limited edition – but the formula is not, fortunately.

Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Cuir Cannage ($63)

Speaking of products that I loved throughout January that shouldn’t surprise regular readers of my blog, I have my latest Dior quint and while it might not elevate itself above the status of the absolutely-phenomenal-but-unfortunately-now-discontinued Grege offering, it has come close with its amazing textures and versatility as a warm neutral eyeshadow palette (with that interesting element of plum smokiness). The palette has a shimmery ivory champagne, a golden-tinged shimmery taupe, a gorgeous metallic plum, a medium toned matte brown and a satin purple-tinged black and I have been reaching for all five of these shades throughout the month for my typical neutral but kind-of-smokey eye. The blackened plum has been particularly intriguing in my experience because of how easily the pigmented shade can be used with an angled brush for effortless soft liner. If you’re looking for a small but all-inclusive palette, you would likely be satisfied with this one if you were wondering.

What did you love in January?

Beauty & The Book #1

DSC_0282DSC_0280As my blog name might very well imply, I absolutely love all thinks beauty, books and rambling on about it all so I thought I would start a series. And that I would start the series today, apparently.

Ernest Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises”

When you read as often and with as much intensity as I do, – I am and always have been a girl who has her nose in a book and has the ability to read them in one sitting and I am an English student after all – it’s extremely difficult for me to name a favourite book, or even a couple of favourites, but if I had to choose one, this book would be my top choice. In this postwar novel, Hemingway is at his finest with his pared-down prose and injection of dry wit that I adore. It’s a novel about how as people we connect after  the catastrophic event, the first world war but I think it can generally apply to how we connect to how we forge human connections in the contemporary world. I’ll warn you there’s some heavy angst, being a story filled with moderately problematic excessive alcohol consumption and an impossible love story between Lady Brett Ashley and our injured-in-the-war narrator, Jake Barnes. I stress that my words here are not adequate arguments to read the book but I promise that it will be worth your while.

Chanel Rouge Double Intensite in Darling Pink ($39)

Christmas money in wallet, I headed to my local Chanel counter with my usual partner in crime, Lauren, and ended up with this beauty, unable to leave the store without it – or at least that’s what I tell myself. The double ended lip product was definitely an impulse buy, being my first lip product from Chanel (and only my second purchase – my first being my foundation love, Perfection Lumiere Velvet – ) and although I’m sure my bank account balance is cringing, I’m sure it will not be my last. For one this long-wearing lip product has the best formula, not highlighting dry patches on my lips and not drying them out either but still lasting through a good ol’ meal, which is not a small feat when I’m concerned. Despite not being a gloss girl, I quite enjoy the topcoat that adds the moisture and glossy finish to the lips as it doesn’t have an  ounce of stickiness and also feels more balmy. One of the most remarkable things about the product is the unfortunately-limited-edition colour; it’s a light pink shade that doesn’t actually lean coral that I don’t hate on myself – and actually kind of find flattering. I would describe it as a neutral pink with subtle rosy undertones. I would also describe my description of the colour as fluent bullshit with description overload and a side order of word vomit thrown in. One last thing: the lip colour does not fade from the center, leaving that hideous ring that I have been spotted sporting far too often for my liking.

Any thoughts on the book or the beauty bit?

The Weekday Wishlist #3 | February

Recently Updated56

Today I had a paper due, I’m sick with my yearly cold from hell, I have a growing pile of work to get accomplished, I’m exhausted and we had yet another storm today so it’s safe to say that I was not up for much blogging wise – but I did want to post something. Although it has only been a few weeks since my last wishlist post and I haven’t really gone shopping so I’m still lusting after those items big time, I thought I would gather another collection of items that I’ve got my eye on.I’m not complaining, but I’m complaining.

Remember when I talked about how nail obsessed I randomly became last week and lusted over nail polishes? Well, the whole gorgeous Essie Cashmere Matte collection was the main object of my lusting, with a gorgeous collection of interesting neutrals with matte but reflective shades. I’m forcing myself to narrow myself to one polish and this mauve-hued taupe shade has to be my top pick with the amazing pale blue duochrome. Unfortunately, I don’t know a single person who has managed to nab them in stores around me.

I came to accept the sad truth the other day, that my loved Caudal moisturizer is nearing the end and as much as I want to purchase another out of my anxiety for being without the soothing cream, I want to try something else – namely this mineral sunscreen enriched moisturizer that has enticing ingredients but actually costs under thirty dollars. As regular readers might be aware, I tend to suffer from bizarre reactions to sunscreen but I am definitely attempting to get sunscreen into my daily routine, rain or shine – especially after learning that your skin is damaged by the UVA rays as soon as the sun is out, even inside your own house. Moderately terrifying, no?

Ever since falling in love with the formula of the hella expensive Chanel Rouge Double Intensites last month, I’ve been eager to have a go with the more affordable dual-ended long wearing lip products in the same vein and I’ve heard great things about the new L’Oreal offering. The fact that it actually comes with a balm and not that gloss topper intrigued me as did the medium-toned peachy rose hue.

Just like every beauty blogger seems to be on the planet, I’m somewhat willingly taking a ride on the Hourglass train and the current object of this obsession is this eyeshadow palette despite the fact that I need an eyeshadow palette like a need a hole in my head and I’ve heard some questionable things about the blend ability and powdery nature of these shadows. There’s something so intriguing about their smokey palette offering – even beyond the gorgeous packaging – with a matte cream, a metallic gold, matte medium-dark brown, a darkened teal blue with a shimmery finish and a metallic taupe-leaning silver. The palette has an interesting combination of both warm and cool-toned shades and it appears to have a healthy mixture of matte and shimmery finishes, along with the colours for a multitude of interesting variations on the smokey eye theme.

I’ve mentioned more than once or twice in recent months that I’ve been getting into that whole lip liner game that has been oh-so-trendy in recent months and obviously that might be conducive to adding a new liner or two from the stash. MAC’s probably my go-to place for all things makeup because they are trustworthy, have a lovely return policy and aren’t actually ridiculously expensive and I’ve heard great things about this rosy shade. Believe it or not, it’s actually not red, but like the name could suggest half way in between a nude and a red.

For years and years American Eagle has been my go-to haunt for all things clothing, although I’ve definitely stopped my frankly obsessive weekly visits in the last year or two. There’s something about the store that allows for a stress-free shopping experience, they have great sales and generally decent prices – although this is a rather expensive t-shirt – and do that comfy slouchy top thing that I absolutely adore. I love this burgundy hue and that whole loose and slouchy vibe and just about everything else minus the retail price and the fact that it only comes in one size. Lame.

What do you have your heart set on at the moment?

Weekly Medley #52

20150126-185056In the last week I’ve experienced the cold in both the worst and the best way; I both came to the realization that I had quite a cold and enjoyed the cold weather brought on by the blizzard. I really should have figured out that I was coming down with a cold earlier than this, with the extreme fatigue and the beginnings of congestion that developed into quite the sore throat and cough but the last few days have left me aware with complete certainty that my current state and general sense of grogginess has been brought on by that lovely thing that is known as a cold. On the more exciting front, it’s been a winter wonderland outside – aside from the freezing rain and general iciness – with snow falling and that authentic cozy feeling all around and I have to say I rather enjoyed Tuesday’s snow day where I enjoyed being a generally unproductive human being without shame. Now, let’s get onto the other points of interest this week…

(1) Hello October’s “Going Out-Out” post

I really really love Suzie’s blog in general and more specifically I adore these kinds of chatty/wordy posts that describe a makeup routine with some general product thoughts and ramblings included. Once upon a time, I used to write these posts frequently but as of late I seem to have stopped, but it should be noted that mine tend to involve much more aimless rambling. I have got to get back into writing my ‘The Daily Face’ posts; note to self.

(2) Live Chat With The Paula’s Choice Research Team – “How to Treat Your Most Frustrating Facial Concerns”

In the last month or so more generally, I’ve discovered and loved these hour long informative skincare videos with the research team at Paula’s Choice and Friday’s was a particularly enjoyable one. I love that their information is unbiased, despite having their own range to promote and clear and I also get a kick out of the sense of humor of the staff hosting the show. I highly recommend giving these a watch if you want to learn more about skincare – even if you feel you are already somewhat educated – or specific skincare products/ingredients and you enjoy some sense of humor thrown in more often than not.

(3) This Week’s  Posts

I’m well aware that I am my worst critic, but as a whole I have been happy with the four posts I’ve done in the last week, especially when you take how busy classes have left me and that lovely cold that I’m currently experiencing. I didn’t feel like any of my posts were rushed and I was pleased with my mediocre photography, despite the general lighting issues. However, if you’re someone who works full-time or juggles classes with an actual job, I have some serious respect for you – I have no idea how you do it and I’m in awe. Finally this week, I managed to post the long-promised review of the DiorSkin Star Foundation.

(4) Two Costco Acquisitions

I’ve been impressing myself recently with my shopping restraint; I haven’t been casually strolling into the drugstore and coming out with four or five things every week or so at all, or doing any sort of indulgent splurging on anything resembling the regular. This aside, I ventured into Costco on Friday with the mother and picked up two things: the Eucerin Calming Daily Moisturizing Cream and a book titled The Back of the Turtle by Thomas King. I’m running low on moisturizer for my eczema-laden skin and the Eucerin offering seemed to fit the bill with a suitable ingredient list and a large affordable tube amount plus there’s something wonderful about reading a book for fun that can make life seem a little less frightening and repulsive. I might have read a fair amount of the book and I might have enjoyed it tremendously.

(5) The Nail Obsession

I go through the strangest phases of enjoying nail polish and then being annoyed by the maintenance of the stuff but this week in particular I have been obsessed, painting my nails multiple times and actually writing a polish-centric blog post. Also I’ve enjoyed obsessing over nail polish with my friend instead of doing anything productive, ideally the piling mountain of schoolwork.

How was your week?
